Clearcuts: a series.

This new series is informed by the heightening intensity of ecological calamities in our era. This first group of paintings has been inspired by reading “The Golden Spruce,” an anecdotal account of logging history in BC. In spite of the dismaying implications, the visual patterns created by forestry practice, as seen from above, are intriguing, and in some ways reminiscent of the bejewelled paintings of Gustav Klimt. Experimenting with these world images as a departure point, I see an inexhaustible potential for colour and pattern. As with my previous alley paintings, there is a juxtaposition of the grim reality with its visual esthetics. For the initial work in this new phase, go to “Newest.’

Dogwood Initiative

I’m very happy to have been able to donate a painting to a wonderful environmental group here in BC, Dogwood Initiative. “The Train and the River” describes a chemical spill that took place in 2005 on the Cheakamus River near Squamish. This painting was originally done for Mayworks 2008 in Parksville; the theme was “Water and Humanity.” It is a literal representation of the events of that day.

An interesting bike path from Vancouver to New Westminster, the Valley Greenway goes through an intriguing mix of industrial and natural areas. These moody paintings are from the Gilmore area in Burnaby, after a ride on an overcast day. See “Newest.”
