A piece from the summer. “Jet Streams and Oyster Floats, Ships Point” was the result of two beautiful days spent at Fanny Bay, Vancouver Island. As I drank in the sunset in its beauty and tranquillity, the oyster floats in the distance created distinct angular shapes against the horizon, juxtaposed against the softness of the light and the water. Unexpectedly, a magical streak of light against the clouds moved northward and down across the sky. As I watched, three more lines of dazzling white emerged and made their way toward the horizon. It dawned on me that these were evening flights, making their way from the Comox Valley to some unknown somewhere out there in the world. The whole scene–the beautiful sunset, the stark oyster floats, and the brilliant jetstreams–was suddenly filled with drama, and I saw the painting clearly in my mind.
