Nightfall Pike Market

One of the paintings for the “Downtown” show at TOSH gallery, Qualicum. Pike Market on a rainy evening, things gradually slowing down, the lights emanating warmth on the shiny paving stones. One of my favourite places to visit; it never really grows old.  36″ x 48″.

Tucson Station Sunset

Inspired by a train trip from West Texas to Los Angeles. This one is going into the “Downtown” show. Maybe it’s stretching the point a little, but after a few weeks in a small West Texas town, the Tucson station with its charming railside bistro offering wine, cappuccinos, and paninis felt very urban! and it is, after all, part of their downtown. Of course, the best part was the sunset. 24″ x 48″.

Two pieces going into the “Downtown” show. An old man in Victoria,  a young woman in Vancouver. “Chinatown Market” and “Gastown Princess,” each 48″ x 24″.

Baristas

This one was done awhile back, but I’m including it in the “Downtown” show because cafes fit so well into the theme. This is an amalgam of a JJ Beans and a Bean Around the World: the baristas were at JJ’s, the customers were from the Bean Around. Smell the coffee!

Coming soon…

“Downtown:” a solo show in the Brown Gallery at TOSH, The Old Schoolhouse Arts Centre in Qualicum Beach, BC. These paintings cover all sorts of ‘urban,’ from big cities like Seattle, to small towns like Cumberland on the Island. Whether you live in a huge centre or a small village, there’s a certain feeling about going into town. You come out of your private world and mingle with the larger whole. There you find people, activity, energy, and the feeling of being part of a great stream of things.

“Exit Strategy”

Inspired by Vancouver…strange & fated city. Old brick buildings…the sound of trains…ships…constant movement. Somehow the underlying malaise of imminent departure. We fly away like the crows…to the forests..to the mountains…with the city in our hearts.

“Talking Stick”

Inspired by the Music Salon evening.  ”Talking Stick” refers to the wooden instruments of the musicians, plus the wooden telephone poles that power our communications. I suppose the “telephone pole” is giving way to transmission lines and cell phone towers, also featured in many of my paintings.
